Mathematics at Northwestern University has been taught since the University itself first offered classes. One of the University's three original faculty members appointed in 1854 was Henry S. Lois Wilfred Griffiths was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, on June 27, 1899. She attended elementary and high school in the state of Washington, obtained her B. S. (1921) and M. S. (1923) at the University of Washington, and received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1927.
